Yasmine El Meleegy

The Six Hundred Seventy-Four Forms And A Dragon, 2023

A Solo Show at FOR space, Basel.

“Future Farms”, a sculptural installation emerges as a harbinger of future agricultural landscapes, challenging the entrenched paradigm of contemporary agricultural progress. It interrogates the current landscape of agriculture, from intellectual property policies on seeds to international trade agreements and their impacton food insecurity. El Meleegy expands on the political dimensions associated with the tomato - a fruit that’s widely used within the domestic sphere. The artwork is composed of ten fiberglass sculptures which resemble the Roma, heirloom, and supermarket tomato, where the artist plays with materiality and form to showcase the fruit in its most ideal form. She accentuates the tomatoes’ features, highlighting their color and texture to reflect on genetic modification as a mechanism for mass production and control.

In dialogue with the exhibition, a magazine was published with text contributions by Hala N. Barakat, Francesco Buscemi, Ismail Fayed and Laila Gutknecht.
